Our creative partners #9: Nonclassical
Waterloo Festival thrives on creative partnerships, on bringing professionals from the world of arts and music to collaborate with and showcase their wonderful work to our communities in Waterloo, Lambeth and – thanks to the marvels of the internet – elsewhere.
To finish off this series, we’re featuring Nonclassical with whom we had an event planned at St John’s for June 2020.
Nonclassical is a music promoter, record label and events producer presenting the best new classical, experimental and electronic music. Defying classical conventions and genre boundaries, we develop, produce and promote innovative music – supporting emerging artists and bringing new music to new audiences.

Founded in 2004 by composer Gabriel Prokofiev, Nonclassical began as a classical clubnight focused on presenting new music in non-traditional performance spaces. We have since presented events across the UK and worldwide, and our record label is home to a roster of artists, varying from new music veterans to emerging artists in contemporary, experimental and electronic music. We also run artist development schemes for composers and performers alike, supporting emerging artists in the new music scene at pivotal points in their career.
Like many organisations, we’ve had to postpone a number of gigs due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. But in the meantime, we’ve been busy developing a digital programme of events alongside releasing an assortment of new music on our label. So far we’ve hosted a total of eight online workshops, exploring lockdown field recording with Kate Carr and virtually realised modular synths with Dominic Murcott.

From improvised jazz squall to fresh Swiss experimentalism, our label catalogue has been growing rapidly since lockdown began, with plenty more launches planned for the summer too. Our most recent release Loophole is from pianist and composer Roman Rofalski – combining electronic processes with piano improvisations, get a sneak preview of our latest EP Loophole from Roman Rofalski in Alpha.
There’s plenty more to be announced over the coming weeks, including a special new compilation released on Friday 3 July. Sign up to our mailing list here to be the first to hear about our events, releases and updates on our summer programme as it’s unveiled in the coming weeks.
